Joseph Pilates’ exercise method is based on a set of principles which include focus, balance, concentration, control, centered awareness, fluid movements, and breath. Central to Pilates is the development of core strength – this increases flexibility, coordination and body awareness.

Pilates has grown in popularly and is practiced by people with widely varied backgrounds and abilities. It is also suitable for recovery/ rehabilitation from injury/ medical procedures.

It is often recommended by physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and doctors.

One of the reasons it has become so popular is that it is effective and it works!

You don’t have to worry that you:

  • aren’t fit enough, or
  • that you may be too fit, or
  • that you haven’t been to a class for a long time, or ever

Pilates will help restore your body, and prepare you for your next adventure.

Under expert guidance you work at the level that you are comfortable with, challenge yourself when it feels right for you, and importantly - rest when you need to.

It does not matter what the rest of the class are doing – the time you spend in class is about you and you are encouraged to focus on yourself.

The exercises originally were developed to be performed on an exercise mat – but Joseph also developed equipment that enabled recovery/ rehabilitation students to benefit from his method. 

Today you can choose to join a mat class (like the classes I offer – see Class Times), or join an equipment class - such as a private one to one Reformer class that I offer. If you prefer something more active, maybe try a Barre class - this is a fun cardio workout combining Pilates, Ballet and Stretching to music.
